The owners of a popular restaurant in Galway have won praise for a heartwarming gesture to members of the local community as Ireland is set to be hit by a “multi-hazard weather event” this weekend.

Snow, ice, heavy rain and sleet are to sweep over the island of Ireland over the next 24 hours, with up to 25cm of snowfall expected amid temperatures of -6C.

A series of weather warnings have come into effect, with status orange snow and ice warnings in place for Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wicklow, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary. These warnings took effect from 5pm on Saturday and will continue until 5pm on Sunday.

A separate rain and snow warning has been issued for Cork, Kerry and Waterford. This warning came into effect at 5pm on Saturday and runs for 24 hours. These counties are also under a status yellow rain warning, which ran from 1pm on Saturday.

With temperatures plummeting across the country, The Galleon Restaurant in Salthill has pledged to look after the elderly and infirm in the community as many may find it difficult to get around in the coming days.

The Galleon Restaurant has offered to bring food to the "elderly, vulnerable, or isolated" and urged those who know someone who fits the bill to get in touch with staff, Galway Beo report.

In a post shared on their Facebook page, the restaurant said: "If you or someone you know in Salthill is elderly, vulnerable, or isolated during this rare cold snap, please remember, Myself, Astrid, Desi Or Anton, and the team at The Galleon Restaurant are here to support you over the next few days. If you know someone who can’t get out for lunch, please give us a call at 091522963. We’ll happily arrange to bring a warm meal to them.

"There’s always someone on duty and we’re only too glad to make sure your loved ones are cared for and looked after."

Locals shared the offer far and wide on social media, and praised the "fabulous" gesture.

"Such a considerate gesture. Your kindness knows no bounds," said one person. "My family were regular customers for many years and this was my Dad's favourite restaurant. You showed us compassion last Easter after my Dad had a set back and we popped in to diffuse things. We are grateful to you all for such kind and professional service over many, many years."

Another person added: "Beautiful gesture, wonderful staff so kind, caring and helpful hence why I bring service user there for his Sunday roast."

And a third said: "The Galleon Restaurant & Staff are a gift to Galway. What a beautiful gesture of kindness. I hope your good deed is remembered when business is slow. Well done guys."
