Kyran Durnin lived away from his family for almost a year when he was a toddler, we can reveal.
Gardai have discovered the missing boy was looked after by another relative who didn't have any children of their own at the time.
It is understood that the individual offered to mind him while his mother Dayla was coping with having another baby.

Investigating officers have interviewed the person concerned and are satisfied Kyran was much loved and well looked after during that period of his short life.
Gardai have spent the past few weeks building up a detailed profile of the young lad's life from the moment he was born until the time he vanished in June 2022.
They have interviewed a large number of relatives who knew the child and were mysteriously excluded from his life in recent years.
Some say they haven't seen him in two or three years but were always told by a senior family member that he was fine or away on a play date.
Gardai still have no idea how he died or where it happened.
A source said: "There is still a conspiracy of silence going on and a certain number of people are busy covering up for each other. They have their story and they are sticking to it.
"They think they can get away with it because we haven't found Kyran's body yet but they won't.
"There is far too much information coming in from the public and every move they make is being watched.
"There is a lot of anger in the Drogheda area over this case and how anyone can ignore the death of a six-year-old boy for over two years."
Kyran would be eight years old if he were alive today. One of the suspects told detectives that he was with Anthony Maguire when he disappeared.
Mr Maguire denied any involvement when questioned by police and subsequently took his own life.
Unfortunately he didn't leave any information about what happened to Kyran.
Gardai are hoping to make more arrests in the case in the coming weeks and also to resume digging for Kyran's body at other locations.
