Experts explain why you should

As Ireland braces itself for the big freeze that is forecast this weekend, drivers are being reminded never to turn to their kettles to de-ice their windscreens.

Over the coming days, many will be waking up to the annoying sight of their windscreens being frozen over as temperatures drop to subzero and wintry showers fall in many areas. While it may be tempting to boil the kettle to clear the windscreen in a quick fix, it could cause significant damage.

Road assistance company Green Flag has warned of the dangers of using hot water from the kettle, and suggested some alternatives to ensure you don't cost yourself considerable amounts of money in repairs.

A spokesperson told The Mirror: "Firstly, ignore all the advice about boiling kettles. It may seem logical that hot water will melt the ice, but if the water's too hot it could cause your windscreen to crack. Also, the water may spill on the ground and freeze, forming a dangerous patch of ice.

"Sitting in your car with the engine running and fan on (while you wait for the heat of your car to de-ice the windows) not only takes a long time but wastes fuel and increases wear on the engine.

"It’s also not a good idea trying to get rid of ice or snow with the windscreen wipers - this can very quickly damage your wipers."

De-icer at work

The company has recommended buying a can of de-icer as well as a scraper for the safest way to clear that pesky ice.

"The best method is to invest in a can of de-icer and a scraper," they added. "Spray the de-icer all over the windscreen and then scrape off the melting ice with the ice scraper. Don't be tempted to use a credit card or a CD case, as you could end up scratching your windscreen.

"Most good screen washes also contain de-icer. This can help clear the ice from your windscreen and prevent your wash bottle and spray nozzles from freezing.

"Make sure you defrost the entire windscreen (not just the small area in front of the driver's seat) as well as all the other windows and mirrors. Do it before you set off, otherwise your view could be dangerously restricted."

The AA has also encouraged road users to "turn on the warm air blower" and "heated mirrors" to clear frost cover quickly and safely.

They explained: "Start the engine and turn on the warm air blower on the windscreen. Switch on the rear windscreen heater and heated mirrors, if you have them. Turn on the air-con. It's not just for summer – it'll remove moisture from the air to stop the car from misting up. Don't use your hands to wipe misted-up windows – you'll leave greasy smears and a diamond ring could scratch the glass. Use a lint-free absorbent cloth if necessary. Stay with your car the whole time while the engine's running."
