Irishman recovering in hospital after almost drowning while proposing to girlfriend in Italy
The incident happened in Trieste on Sunday night. The man had to be rescued by firefighters and the Coast Guard
An Irishman is recovering in an Italian hospital – after he nearly drowned proposing to his girlfriend.
Reports in Italy say the 41-year-old was down on one knee at a marina in the north east of the country when he lost his balance and fell into the water. The bizarre incident happened in Trieste, a coastal city an hour and a half west of Venice.
The Italian Coast Guard say the incident happened at Venice Wharf, part of the popular Marina San Giusto at around 11pm on Sunday.

They say the Irish man decided to surprise his girlfriend -who is also from Ireland – with a proposal. But before his partner could answer him, the man lost his balance and ended up falling into the waters of the Gulf of Trieste.
The man was struggling to get out of the water and his distraught partner then raised the alarm. Local firefighters rushed to the scene and, with the help of a Coast Guard cutter, managed to rescue the Irishman from the waters.
But he was found to be suffering from hypothermia and was then rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital. He was still receiving treatment on Monday evening – but it is understood his condition is not serious.
