Emotional tributes have been paid following the death of a young Galway man in the US earlier this week.

Aidan Whyte, who was originally from Ballinasloe but had been living in Manhattan for a number of years, sadly passed away on Sunday, December 8 following a 'tragic accident'.

A notice shared on RIP.ie states: "Aidan passed away following a tragic accident on the 8th December 2024. He will be missed by his heartbroken mother Phil, sister Josephine, brothers Paschal, Paul, Justin, Christopher and Fergal, sisters in-law Estella, Emma, Orla and Joanne, nephews & nieces Oisín, Joseph, Bría, Éanna and Saorla, his extended family and friends and his American family."

Aidan's family asked that donations be made to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, a charity that helps to bring the bodies of people who have died abroad back to Ireland, as they work to bring his remains back home.

Aidan, a former pupil of St. Raphael's College in Loughrea, has been remembered as 'a true gentleman and someone who left a positive impression any time you met him' by friends and family, who have paid tribute to the Killimordaly native.

"Most sincere condolences to all the Whyte family on the devastating loss of Aidan, take comfort in the fact that Aidan was the perfect example of what a gentleman should be and it was just natural for him. Great memories of Aidan from Raphaels, lovely hurler and great craic," said one of Aidan's former classmates.

Another person added: "Truly a kind man who treated strangers and acquaintances with the respect and kindness of great friends. Many fond memories and laughs with Aidan in the short span of our friendship. May he rest in peace and god bless his family."

While a third said: "My deepest sympathies to all of Aidans family on his untimely passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Aidan on a J1 in New York Many years ago. He couldn’t do enough for you, he was warm and kind and I will never forget it. Rest in Peace Aidan"

Aidan worked at Gabby O'Hara's Irish pub in New York, where he proved a hugely popular figure with customers and fellow staff.

A number of regular visitors to the pub have paid tribute to the popular barman, with one person saying: "We have known Aidan for a long time. It was always a pleasure meeting him in Gabbys. He was always very welcoming, kind and chatty. We will miss him dearly. May his gentle soul rest in peace."

Another customer added: "So sorry to hear of the very sad passing of Aidan. We had the pleasure of getting to meet and know Aidan in Gabby O Haras n NY some time ago n he was such a welcoming gent to meet he will be sorely missed in both NY and at home. Our deepest sympathies to all the Whyte family on Aidans passing."

While a third said: "Aidan was friendly and loved by all. He was so much fun to hangout with; on either side of the stick. Aidan always came with a smile on his face. We wish our deepest condolences to his family back home and his Gabby's family up the block. May he rest in peace."

Staff at Gabby O'Haras also offered up their own tribute to the much-loved Galway native in a message which read: "Our sincere condolences to all the Whyte family, and New York family on the sudden passing of Aidan. We all loved Aidan so very much. He is greatly missed by all, may he Rest in Peace. All the staff in Gabby O’ Haras."

Aidan's family have said that arrangements to being made to bring his remains home. A celebration of Aidan's life will be held later today (Friday, December 13) at Pelham Funeral Home in New York.
