Woman, 80s, killed in two-car collision on motorway in Laois

A woman has died following a two-car collision on a motorway in Co Laois, where gardaí and emergency services remain at the scene this evening.
The woman, who was aged in her 80s, was driving one of the cars involved in the crash on the M7 at Borris-on-Ossory around 4:15pm. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the other car, a woman in her 50s, has been taken to Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore with serious injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The collision occurred at Junction 21 eastbound on the M7. The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conduct a technical examination of the scene.
The body of the deceased has been removed to Portlaoise Mortuary, where a postmortem examination is due to take place.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to make contact with investigators.
“Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on the M7 at Borris-in-Ossory, Co. Laois, this afternoon, Thursday 28th November 2024,” said a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána.
“The collision occurred at approximately 4:15pm at Junction 21 of the M7 eastbound and involved two cars.
“The driver of one of these cars, a woman aged in her 80s, has been pronounced deceased at the scene. Her body has been removed to Portlaoise Mortuary where a PM will take place.
“The driver of the other car, a woman aged in her 50s, has been taken to Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore to be treated for injuries believed to be serious but non-life threatening,” they added.
“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Gardaí are appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling on the M7 and its environs, between 3:50pm and 4:20pm this afternoon, to make this footage available.”
