Young dad-of-two killed in horror crash involving lorry at N17 blackspot
Landscape gardener Sean Maye, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene near Claremorris in Co Mayo on Monday evening after his car collided with a truck
The victim of a fatal road accident involving a car and a lorry on the N17 in Mayo earlier this week has been named as father-of-two Sean Maye from Tubbercurry, Co Sligo.
The 32-year-old was driving the car when it collided with a lorry at Corbally, near Claremorris, around 5:20pm on Monday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The horrific accident occurred on a stretch of the N17 where multiple tragedies have occurred this year, including the deaths of Una Carlin Bowden, 47, and her two daughters, Ciara, 14, and Saoirse, 10 in March.

Mr Maye, a landscape gardener, had a young son and daughter with his partner, Niamh McNamara.
The crash occurred at a location on a five-mile stretch of the N17 where six road deaths were recorded during the first five months of 2024 alone.
Local Aontú Councillor Paul Lawless said the latest accident was an "absolute tragedy”, and said his thoughts were with the victim’s family.
“I just really want to extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the family. It’s a devastating loss,” he said. “It’s just so heartbreaking, and my thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Mr Lawless said work was underway to make the N17 safer in the wake of the series of fatalities that have occurred on this part of the road in recent months.
“I want to assure the people of Mayo and beyond that I am working as hard as I can to make the road safer, working with both Mayo County Council and [Transport Infrastructure Ireland],” he said.
He noted that the local authority was in the process of reviewing the road, and a safety audit is being carried out.
Mr Maye’s funeral will take place at St. John Evangelist Church, Tubbercurry at 11:30am on Thursday with burial afterwards in Rhue Cemetery.
He is survived by his partner, Niamh McNamara, children Ella and Kyle, mother Joanne, father John, sister Sarah, brother Ryan, and extended family.
