Marathon star Ann-Marie McGlynn heads Irish team to compete at European Cross Country Champs
It has been a remarkable few weeks for veteran athlete Ann-Marie McGlynn and she will look to keep her hot streak going in Turkey
Reigning Irish marathon and national senior cross-country champ Ann Marie McGlynn will lead Ireland's bid for glory at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Turkey on December 8.
McGlynn, 44, retained her national title at the Dublin Marathon earlier this month before winning the cross-country championship in Enniskillen 10 days ago.
The Letterkenny AC runner was part of the Ireland team that won a bronze at the Euro cross in Turin two years ago. McGlynn's team-mates in the women's cross country this time will be Niamh Allen (Leevale AC), Danielle Donegan (Tullamore Harriers), Fiona Everard (Bandon AC), Mary Mulhare (Portlaoise AC) and Cheryl Nolan (St Abban’s AC).

Keelan Kilrehill won the men's senior cross country championship in Enniskillen and the Moy Valley AC member will be joined in the senior men’s team by Cormac Dalton (Mullingar Harriers), Efrem Gidey (Clonliffe Harriers), Sean Tobin (Clonmel AC), William Fitzgerald (Craughwell AC) and Pierre Murchan (Dublin City Harriers).
Both Kilrehill and Dalton were on the Irish team that were fourth in Brussels last year. There are 36 athletes in total participating in the European Cross Country in Antalya.
Nick Griggs, who won the bronze medal at under-20 level a year ago, will be in the under-23 race this time - the under-20s won the gold in the team event and, while a number of that team are now at under-23 level, this year's under-20s are tipped to make the podium this time.
“On the back of last year’s success in Brussels, I am delighted that we travel to Turkey with strong teams again," said Athletics Ireland National Endurance Co-Ordinator, Mark Kenneally.
It is getting harder to make the Irish team for the European Cross Country Championships year on year, and great credit goes to all the athletes who have made this team.
"We now travel to Turkey in December with realistic medal ambitions and will look for strong performances from athletes across the board.”
