Victoria Smurfit reveals final

Actress Victoria Smurfit has shared the heartbreaking final words she told her mum before she passed away.

Victoria lost her mum Caroline in January 2022 after she suffered a stroke.

She reflected on the 48 hours after the devastating stroke and how quickly the time went as she waited in the hospital.

Victoria enjoyed a very close relationship with her mum, with the pair spending a lot of time together - Caroline would often fly to visit Victoria in America.

The Rivals star chatted with Ryan Tubridy on the The Bookshelf Podcast and opened up about the incredibly emotional time in her life.

She said: “I just kept saying to her don't fight it, it's ok. Up there you've got your mum, you got your dad, you've got your best friends, you've got.. I listed off all the dogs. You've got so many people up there waiting for you,.

“Just look up and just go be free of this body that's just let you down. Your overcoat has let you down, your spirit will always be. I'll look after people down here.

“Just go fly, go fly. And she did.”

Victoria was holding her mother at the time of her passing and recalled how fast everything progressed after that.

“She took her last breath in my arms,” she said. “Within 20 minutes (of her mum's death), you're then sat on a curbside at 4.15 in the morning with a Tesco bag full of your mother's stuff and clothes and wondering what in the name of Jesus happened there because it was sort of 48 hours from stroke to gone.”

Back in January 2022, Victoria shared the news of her mother’s passing alongside a touching photo of them together.

In a tribute, she wrote: “Gave my mum a last kiss at 2.48am. I sit here devastated but so grateful to have been raised by her and to have been hers.

“Our mum, Caroline, radiated kindness, was effortlessly beautiful and saw the world with comedy glasses."

She added: “And what she didn't know about pasta isn't worth knowing. God damn it Ma, go make heaven laugh hard. You'll always be endlessly loved. By so very very many of us.”

Victoria also opened up about her daughter Evie’s struggles with Stargardt disease, a rare genetic disease that leads to a loss of vision, and how hard it was for her to be told “there’s something wrong and you can’t fix it”.

Speaking on The Bookshelf with Ryan Tubridy, Victoria said: “My eldest has got a disease called Stargardt and she’s losing her eyesight. And so, you’re sent on your way, ‘get on with yourself’, that’s hard”.

She talked to Ryan about how she overcomes that feeling, saying that “there’s got to be something out there, there’s got to be something I can do and just looking everywhere, turning over every stone, every rock”.

This led to Victoria sharing that there is a “trial that I got her on and it appears to be slowing the deterioration”.

Even though she was “told by the doctor when she was diagnosed that she’d be legally blind by 18”.

But Victoria added: “She’s now 20… my kid, who can’t see very much, doing an art degree in Dublin.”
