New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has revealed that he grew up admiring former Ireland midfielder Roy Keane’s style of play.

And he would love nothing more than to unearth a player with similar qualities for his own Old Trafford revolution.

Amorim, who takes charge of United for the first time in Sunday’s Premier League clash with Ipswich Town, was just eight years old when Keane joined United from Nottingham Forest in 1993.

By the time Keane left in 2005, Amorim had turned 20, so he spent his formative years watching the Corkman spearhead a glorious era for the Red Devils.

Now that he has landed one of the biggest jobs in football, the Portuguese coach has already begun identifying the kind of qualities needed to revive United.

Speaking to Keane’s former teammate Gary Neville ahead of the Ipswich game, Amorim said: “He [Roy Keane] was a player that I really liked. I know he's a little bit crazy but he was a massive player.

“I like players with character. I think they can improve - not just what Roy Keane did on the pitch - the way he influenced others.

“That is very important in one player, you must have this kind of player in the big clubs, and I hope we will have in the future players like Roy Keane.”
