Former Girls Aloud star Cheryl Ann Tweedy opened up about how grief changed her perspective on life as she endured a double tragedy.

The singer was overcome with grief after her ex-boyfriend, One Direction star Liam Payne, tragically died at the age of 31, falling from a third-floor balcony at his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16.

This isn’t Cheryl’s first significant loss, as she also mourned the passing of her Girls Aloud bandmate Sarah Harding in 2021. Sarah, who was 39, tragically passed away in September that year after a battle with breast cancer, leaving her loved ones and fans heartbroken. Cheryl later shared how the grief profoundly impacted her life.

She said: "A lot of conversations we had before she left really sparked a different perspective for me, and I'll carry that. She wasn't ready to leave and I think, 'well I'm still here', I've got the gift of life to still live, and I'll do it with her in mind. It does shift a lot of things in your own heart."

Speaking to MailOnline, Cheryl went on: "With the loss and our age we just appreciate and love each other so much more. We always have loved each other, obviously. But it's just different, there's a different depth to it all now."

Upon hearing the news of Liam's death, Cheryl took to Instagram with a picture of Liam and their son when he was just a baby. The singer hasn't returned to social media since. Liam and Cheryl met back in 2008, when Liam auditioned on the X Factor where Cheryl was a judge. Liam was aged 14 at the time and Cheryl was 24.

"I like you, I think you're really cute," Cheryl told him after Simon Cowell knocked him for not being 'fun' enough. She added: "You've got charisma, you gave us that little cheeky wink!"

Liam returned to The X Factor and blew the judges away two years after his first audition. Impressed, Cheryl told him afterwards: "You've definitely got it. Whatever it is, you've got it. And your voice is really powerful." This time, Liam got through as a member of the freshly formed One Direction and was placed in Simon's category.

Cheryl filed for divorce from her French husband in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences in the official paperwork. Although her decree nisi didn't come through until October, Cheryl began carving out a life for herself as a single woman earlier on in the year.

When Liam first shared a photo of his new hand tattoo, it didn't appear to be particularly significant. As time went on, however, it became clear that this body art was a clear tribute to Cheryl's rose tattoo, inked on her bottom. Amid speculation that he and Cheryl were getting closer in the wake of their respective splits, in February of that year, Liam posted a picture of a rose on his Instagram, captioning it: "Happy Valentine's Day baby."

When news of their relationship eventually broke in May 2016 when the couple appeared together at the Global Gift Gala in Cannes, not everyone believed they were the real deal. Then, two days later, Liam confirmed they were an item by changing his Instagram profile picture to a sweet couple's snap.

A year later in, 2017, Cheryl gave birth to Bear, before their relationship ended a few months after. The split was amicable, and Cheryl and Liam had been co-parenting up until his devastating passing.
