Eddie Howe makes vow after house of Newcastle star Joelinton burgled again
Newcastle midfielder Joelinton has suffered a second break-in to his family home in Ponteland and Eddie Howe says the club are working to beef up protection for their players
Eddie Howe has vowed to get extra protection for his Newcastle stars after the home of Brazil midfielder Joelinton was burgled again.
The United head coach says Joelinton was shaken’ after criminals targeted his family home for a second time. Players are particularly vulnerable to opportunistic or organised crime gangs who monitor when they are away on match duties.
Joelinton’s home was breached last season and striker Alexander Isak burgled in April. Howe expressed growing concern over the crime trend and warned security was being stepped up.
He said: “Joe is fine. He was shaken up initially. I have had several conversations with him about his situation, his family and his family’s wellbeing, which is the priority.
“It is very sad to see that happen to him again. Once is bad enough. To see him in that situation again in the same property with the same outcome, I felt really sorry for him. As a football club, we will help him through this process and do everything we can to ensure the safety of himself and his family and his possessions.
“It’s something we have been aware of for a long time and have been trying to give support to the players in terms of safety and the procedures the players need to put in place to protect themselves and their properties. It is a growing concern.
“There’s been a lot of work done to provide that support and make sure we are looking at prevention and ways to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Certainly we will try to do everything we can to improve that side of things for the players.”
The raid happened in Darras Hall, Ponteland last week and Northumbria Police attended the incident. Joelinton said on social media: “To anyone considering doing this: please know that there is nothing valuable left here.”
He added: “What we care about most is our family’s safety and our kids growing up without fear. We hope for a community where our children, and everyone’s children, feel safe. We simply want to live in peace.”
Howe says Newcastle will ‘trade in and out to comply with PSR rules’ in January, describing the clubs financial position as complex. Talks to firm up targets will happen in the next two weeks. He said bids to sign England defender Marc Guehi were considerably less than the reported £65m last summer.
