A big freeze has Ireland in an icy grip - with weather warnings amid plummeting temperatures and snowfalls.

Met Eireann has warned motorists of the possibility of poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions as a result of the weather.

Forecasters anticipate that the spell of wet and cold conditions to continue right through to the weekend.

Weather warnings have been issued by the national forecaster some specific snow/ice warnings for specific counties and a general low temperature/ice warning that will come into effect overnight from 8pm to 10am throughout the week.

Weather expert, Alan O'Reilly, has issued a reminder that this morning's snowfall is expected to freeze later, resulting in hazardous travelling conditions.

Ireland snow tracker

The unseasonably mild November so far has come to an abrupt end and with that comes the arrival of snow and ice for some areas as temperatures plummet.

Status Yellow snow/ice warning

The counties of Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo have been placed under a Status Yellow snow/ice warning since 6.45am this morning. This will remain valid until 11am as those counties are most likely to see heavy snowfall.

Nationwide weather warning

The entire country will fall under a Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning from 8pm tonight until 10am on Wednesday morning, with the potential impacts of the warning including hazardous conditions on roads and paths and general travel disruption. This will return overnight from 8pm to 10am until at least Friday.

RSA warning to motorists

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is urging road users to prepare for hazardous conditions on roads and footpaths after Met Éireann issued a weather advisory for wintry hazards including frost and ice and the potential for sleet, snow and hail throughout the week.

Temperatures across Ireland are set to plummet below zero over the next 48 hours, with the State forecaster issuing a rare country-wide weather warning for low temperatures and ice on Monday afternoon. The yellow status alert will be active between 8pm on Tuesday and 10am on Wednesday and 8pm Wednesday to 10am Thursday.
