Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry both won big at the DP World Tour Championship event in Dubai on Sunday.

In a year of near misses, McIlroy saved his best for last as he won the event by two strokes, a win which kept him at the top of the Race to Dubai standings and handed him the sixth race win of his career.

A stunning three-under on Sunday handed McIlroy the two-stroke win over Rasmus Hojgaard, and while Rory only needed a top-11 finish to win the season-long standings, he walked away with a second piece of silverware courtesy of his third DP World Tour Championship triumph.

That victory earned McIlroy a whopping $3 million, and the Holywood star was overcome with emotion when he spoke to Sky Sports after his win.

"It means a lot..." Rory told Sky Sports after the win before pausing to compose himself.

"I've been through a lot this year. Professionally, personally, and it feels like the fitting end to 2024.

"I've persevered this year a lot, had close calls, wasn't able to get it done, so to be able to get over the line today...

"I got off to a great start and then didn't have my best round, saving par on 15 was huge and then I had four great swings coming in. Really pleased with the way I finished and thankfully I hung on on a tough day."

Offaly native Lowry also had a marvellous week in the desert, finishing in a tie for third place and taking home a cheque for $554,333.33.

Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin snatched one of 10 PGA Tour dual cards with his T-11th finish on Sunday and he will be playing alongside his hero McIlroy on Tour in the US next year.
