Galway woman dragged alongside car after getting coat caught in vehicle door
The driver was unaware that the woman was tethered to his vehicle until other motorists managed to bring his attention to her predicament
A woman aged in her 80s was dragged along the road by a car after her coat got caught in the door as she was exiting the vehicle in Galway on Wednesday.
The driver was unaware that the woman was tethered to the car and proceeded to drive for up to 100 metres before other motorists managed to bring his attention to her predicament.
Fortunately for the woman, the incident occurred outside a hospital, and she was immediately attended by numerous healthcare workers. She was treated at the scene and miraculously escaped with only minor injuries.

Her ordeal began when she was being dropped off outside the Bon Secours Hospital in Renmore for a medical appointment on Wednesday morning. She accidentally closed the door of the car on her coat, and the driver pulled away.
The woman was suddenly pulled backwards and fell to the ground as she was dragged alongside the vehicle as it moved away from the hospital. Bystanders attempted to raise the alarm as the car proceeded towards the main road.
A nurse who was outside the hospital at the time of the incident told the Irish Mirror that the woman was “incredibly lucky” not to have been pulled underneath the wheels of the vehicle.
Other motorists sounded their horns and managed to alert the driver to the fact that an elderly woman was being dragged alongside the car, and he came to a stop. A number of healthcare workers then rushed to her aid.
“It was a terrible shock and I didn’t know much about it,” the woman told the Irish Mirror following the terrifying experience.
“I suppose it could have happened in worse places – I was right outside a hospital and I was very well attended. Before I knew it, I was surrounded by doctors and nurses, and they couldn’t have been nicer.”
She was brought into the hospital in a wheelchair and examined before receiving treatment for her injuries. She still managed to make it to her medical appointment on time.
“I have some nasty scrapes and bruises, mostly on my arm,” added the Galway woman. “But it could have been a whole lot worse. I realise I was very lucky, and I’m very thankful to everyone at the hospital who were so kind and attentive.
“I was wearing a heavy, long coat and, while that’s what got me in trouble, it’s also probably what protected me from worse injuries when I was being dragged along the road.
“I’ll be sure to look behind me next time I’m getting out and closing the door of the car,” she added.
The Bon Secours had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
