Irish General Election 2024: O

Some 115,000 people registered to vote this month in the general election due to be held on Friday November 29.

Voter registration was open until Tuesday, with some fears that people would not register to vote because of the short timeframe between the general election being called and voting day.

An Coimisiún Toghcháin, Ireland’s Electoral Commission, confirmed that some 115,130 new voter applications had been received since the start of November. There were a further 50,541 applications received to update people’s existing registrations on the sites since the start of the month.

In the final two days before registration closes, there were 55,000 new voter applications and over 21,000 update requests.

November 29 will be the third time people will take a trip to the polls in 2024. It follows the Family and Care referendums in March and the local and European elections.

Since the start of the year, 428,073 applications to register have been received, with an additional 225,383 applications to update or amend existing registration details.

Art O’Leary, Chief Executive of the An Coimisiún Toghcháin thanked those who have registered to vote or ensured their details were correct.

“With the registration deadline now passed, voters have time to consider their local candidates and ask any questions they want,” he said.

“Your Vote is Your Voice so we are asking all of these new voters to take the few minutes on November 29 to make sure your voice is heard in this General Election.”
