Missing man found dead inside tanning bed three days after he was last seen entering gym

A man reported missing was found dead in a tanning bed three days after he was last seen walking into a gym.
Derek Sink, 39, was found around four hours after the Planet Fitness gym in Indianapolis opened its doors for business on Monday. Loved ones had reported the 39-year-old missing the day before the gruesome discovery after not hearing from him since Friday.
A customer of the gym who visited on Monday recalled a foul odour that could be smelled through the facility before the body was discovered. Elizabeth Len said: “The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why are we not concerned that the tanning bed has been closed for three days, potentially?”
According to its website, the gym usually shutters at 9pm on Fridays, before reopening at 7am on Saturdays and Sundays and remaining open until 7pm. On Monday, the gym opened at 5am, with Sink being found just before 9am.

Police are investigating the case, and while the coroner's office has not determined the cause of death, cops are not treating the incident as a homicide. Speaking to the local station, the victim's family revealed that he had suffered with addiction issues, with a needle being found in the room at Planet Fitness.
At the time of his death, Sink had been wearing an ankle monitor which helped officers pinpoint his location, his aunt explained. He will be remembered as a loving person, according to his heartbroken relatives. They also told local outlet WTHR that they hope stricter policies will be put in place to prevent any further deaths such as Sink's.
"We were deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members, and the franchise owner is working with the local authorities in their investigation," a Planet Fitness spokesperson said in a statement.
"At Planet Fitness, we have robust operational brand protocols in place, as the safety and well-being of our members is our top priority. We are working closely with our local franchisee to ensure they are upholding those brand protocols."
