Firefighters braced for busies

Firefighters are gearing up for their busiest night of the year tonight and fear it’ll roll on into the weekend.

Chiefs have highlighted how Halloween landing on a Thursday night, after a Bank Holiday weekend, poses its own problems.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer with Dublin Fire Brigade, Greg O’Dwyer, says fires have been building up since Bank Holiday Monday and he expects it to continue for a few more days.

He told the Mirror: “It’s ramped up a fair bit this week. Bank Holiday Monday night was quite busy, but it’s all been saved up for Halloween tonight.

“Although we expect because of the way that Halloween is falling on a Thursday this year and in the middle of the mid-term break that it will extend now into the weekend.

“The weather looks fine as well, as the weather normally has a big impact on it.”

He has called on members of the public to continue reporting any stockpiles of wood in their area, so that they can be cleared and lessen the amount of fire they will have to tackle tonight and in the next few days.

Mr O’Dwyer revealed that Dublin City Council has already managed to clear away 450 tonnes of material that was been stocked up for bonfires.

He added: “This reduces the amount of fires themselves and also ensures the fires that are there are smaller in nature as well, which makes them less dangerous.”
