Manchester United have sacked manager Erik ten Hag following their defeat to West Ham.

United currently sit 14th in the Premier League after they were beaten 2-1 by West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday. In a statement, United confirmed that club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy would take interim charge.

"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future," they said. "Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."

United almost got rid of Ten Hag over the summer after he guided them to their worst ever Premier League finish, but the new regime under Sir Jim Ratcliffe ultimately decided to keep him in charge and triggered a one-year extension to his contract.

However, a disappointing start to the new season has prompted United to pull the trigger. The club have won just one of their last eight games across all competitions, despite spending more than £200million in the summer on new signings.

Ten Hag did win the FA Cup and the League Cup during his two-and-a-half years in charge, having joined United from Ajax where he won three Eredivisie titles in four years. Just last month, United insisted the Dutchman had their "full backing".

Speaking ahead of their 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, United's new CEO Omar Berrada said: "Erik has our full backing and we have worked very closely together in this transfer window. We're going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team.
