Curtis Jones was the best player on the pitch in Liverpool 's win over Chelsea - with Jamie Carragher now questioning whether they need to go back in for Martin Zubimendi.

Jones, 23, scored the winner in the Reds' 2-1 win over Chelsea at Anfield to cap a fine individual display as Arne Slot 's side reclaimed top spot in the Premier League.

The England Under-21 star stood out above former Liverpool targets Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia in the Chelsea engine room. And his influential performance has left Carragher wondering whether the Reds should shelve interest in another target after previously tipping his old club to go back in for Zubimendi, who snubbed them in the summer.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “Curtis Jones was brilliant, he was outstanding. He's still at that stage where he doesn't know for certain if he is first choice, when you have got Gravenberch and Mac Allister.

But what a performance that was, when you think of the quality on the pitch and the money that has been spent. For a local lad to be player of the match.

“I wonder if Arne Slot is going to go back in for Zubimendi in January, but when you see how he played today you think, 'No'. He [Jones] has to now do it on a consistent basis."

Jones has made 140 appearances for Liverpool since progressing through the academy ranks during Jurgen Klopp 's tenure, though hasn't always been a regular.

In Klopp's final season at the helm, Jones enjoyed his best ever campaign, playing more games than ever before (36) and scoring five goals. But while he had finally seemed to earn Klopp's trust last year, he relished the opportunity of a "clean slate" following Slot's appointment in the summer.

He explained back in July: “When Klopp left, I thought I was at the point where our bond had come closer. It is part of the game, changes all the time. I am happy he can walk away as a legend of the club, can experience life with his family.

“Then the experience was the new guy was coming in, everyone saw it as a clean slate. I thought I needed that. I came round the team as a young kid where players were established, I had a job on my hands. I still do but I feel now I’m at the point where everyone is equal. The ones who show it more now will play.”
