A woman in her 30s is in critical condition following a crash along one of Cork's major commuter routes on Wednesday morning.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a two-car crash along a section of the N28 near Mount Oval in Cork following the collision, which occurred at around 10 am on Wednesday. The road remains closed, reports Cork Beo.

The woman has since been conveyed to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

The road closure has led to widespread traffic delays in the area and motorists have been asked to use alternative routes if possible. Gardaí remain at the scene and it's understood that a technical examination will be carried out.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí have received a report of a two-car collision at approximately 10 am this morning on the N28 road Mount Oval area, Co. Cork. One woman in her 30s in critical condition has been transported to Cork University Hospital. The road remains closed at this time."

Gardaí were also called to two incidents along the N40 in Cork on Wednesday. A collision on the road saw traffic grind to a halt shortly before lunchtime, while a gas leak near the Mater Private Network caused nearby roads to be closed and several buildings to be evacuated.

The gas leak was made safe by Gas Network Ireland crews and a spokesperson confirmed that the damage to the pipeline was caused by a third party. The gas supply to the hospital was not interrupted.
