New weather maps show Ireland's temperatures are set to rise later this month, fuelling hopes of an 'Indian summer'. The models suggest a steady increase in temperatures over the coming weeks, with thermometers likely to approach the 20C mark as October progresses.

After a chilly start to the month, many will welcome the forecast of warmer weather, which has been confirmed by Met Eireann. The national forecaster has issued a detailed forecast, spanning the next four weeks, which gives us a glimpse into what the weather might have in store for us.

While the meteorological service anticipates above-average temperatures for the remainder of October, a major change from the recent cold weather, it has tempered expectations for a classic 'Indian summer'. In an update to its forecast, Met Eireann cautioned that, along with the warmth, unsettled conditions are anticipated, with indications of higher-than-average precipitation.

For this week (October 14 to October 20) it said the weather will be mild with highs of 18C along with spells of rain, heavy and thundery at times. It said: "For this week, there is a signal for low pressure to be dominant in the north Atlantic and over Ireland with high pressure over mainland Europe. This will generate a southwesterly airflow over Ireland with above average temperatures expected. Unsettled conditions are indicated with showers or spells of rain expected as there is a signal for higher than average precipitation."

Looking ahead to next week (October 21 to October 27) it added: "This week shows a signal for high pressure over Europe to extend over Ireland bringing higher than average temperatures. There is also a weak signal for higher than average rainfall amounts over the western half of the country."

As we head into November, its forecast for October 28 to November 3 reads: "Uncertainty increases into this week, with a weak signal for high pressure over Ireland to continue. There is also a signal for lower than average rainfall and around average temperatures for late October."

The final week of its forecast (November 4 to November 10) reads: "Further uncertainty into this week with no clear signal for low or high pressure to dominate. Temperatures will be around average for the beginning of November with a slight signal for higher than average rainfall in the southwest."

Met Eireann said its monthly forecast “can at times provide an insight into weather patterns in the months ahead” but cautioned that “they should not be used for specific planning purposes as they have generally low skill” and “forecasts beyond one week become increasingly uncertain due to the chaotic nature of the atmosphere.”

The highest temperature ever recorded in Ireland in October was 25.2C in Kildare in 1908.
