Derry GAA ready to name All-Ireland winner and four-time All Star from neighbouring county as manager

Karl Lacey has emerged as a leading contender to become the new manager of the Derry senior football team.

The county have been searching for a high-profile candidate to replace Mickey Harte, who left the job in July after just one year in charge, having led the Oak Leafers to the Division One league title.

Four-time All Star Lacey would fit the bill for a Derry side that ended a 24-year wait for an Ulster title under the management of Rory Gallagher in 2022, and then retained the Anglo Celt crown in 2023.

An All-Ireland winner with Donegal in 2012, when he was also named Footballer of the Year, Lacey is currently in charge of Down’s former All-Ireland club champions Kilcoo.

He leads them into Sunday’s county final against Burren in Newry, having already managed them to their 11th title in 12 years last season in his first year in charge.

When asked about the speculation over the managerial vacancy, Derry county chairman John Keenan last night insisted the county is “following a process” and will make an announcement “when the process is complete."

Colm O'Rourke 'angrier than he has ever been in football' over Meath management review fiasco

"I have never been more annoyed by anything in football than what has happened in this review process and what has happened since has greatly angered me," O'Rourke told the Meath Chronicle newspaper.

"I wanted to get over the disappointment of not being reappointed, I want to see the Meath team do well, I want to see the new management doing well, but I don't want to be treated with such lack of respect as I was shown at the Co Board meeting last week, and that includes Sean Boylan and all the other people that were involved with me.”

Waterford GAA team's 42-year county title streak ended after shock result

There was a little slice of GAA history on Friday night as Ballymacarbry's sensational county title-winning streak came to an end.

Ballymacarbry had won the last 42 Ladies Football titles in Waterford, but that streak came to a sudden halt on Friday night in Fraher Fields when they were beaten by Comeragh Rangers.

The two sides have met in 11 of the 12 previous county finals, with record-setting Ballymacarbry winning each time.

But the tale was different on Friday night with Comeragh Rangers winning 5-03 to 1-06 on the evening with Katie Murray scoring four goals on the night.

Ballymacarbry first won the title back in 1971 before beginning their record-breaking streak in 1982.

It is the first county title for Comeragh Rangers.
