Irish tourists heading to Spanish hotspots traditionally popular with overseas visitors have been warned of torrential rain over the coming days.

Destinations such as Seville, Malaga and Marbella are all set to be hit with prolonged spells of heavy rain, with up to 200mm of rain set to fall in the worst-affected areas.

Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather sounded an ominous note for tourists heading to certain areas on the southern and western coasts of the country, while a series of warnings has also been issued by AEMET, the Spanish meteorological agency.

“If anyone is heading off to Spain for next few days you might want to pack the rain coat!”, wrote O’Reilly on his popular X page.

“Very heavy rain forecast for parts of South of Spain over next 4-5 days with Seville forecast to get up to 200mm by Wednesday but even Marbella could see 30-40mm.”

Further details of warnings for the areas affected by the inclement weather can be found on the AEMET website here, with both storms and heavy rainfall set to make their mark on Saturday and Sunday in particular.

Closer to home, meanwhile, Ireland is also set for plenty of torrential rain on Sunday evening heading into Monday morning, with Met Éireann issuing separate status yellow rainfall warnings for Cork and Waterford.

Heavy and persistent rain will lead to spot flooding in both counties with the warnings expiring on Sunday at 11pm and Monday morning at 2am for Cork and Waterford respectively.
