The Princess of Wales marked a major milestone when she made a surprise visit to Southport with Prince William.

The outing was Kate's first official engagement since it was announced her chemotherapy treatment had ended following her cancer diagnosis earlier this year. The touching trip saw the couple meet the loved ones of three little girls who were fatally stabbed during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29 in Southport, and they also met children's dance teacher as well as emergency services workers.

The engagement was also the first official joint outing of William and Kate this year with their last being Kate's Christmas Carol concert at Westminster Abbey, all the way back in December, weeks before she was admitted to hospital for major abdominal surgery prior to her cancer diagnosis. Here's all we know about her treatment and her return to royal duties...

Chemotherapy treatment

Kate was first admitted to hospital for major surgery in January and after that received the news that cancer had been present and started a course of preventative chemotherapy treatment.

She emotionally announced to the world in late March that she had received her diagnosis and took time away from the public spotlight while she received her treatment. Her first major appearance after the announcement came several months later at Trooping the Colour in June and she also attended the men's Wimbledon final in July.

Then, just four weeks ago, another highly personal video of Kate and her family was released revealing that her chemotherapy had ended and her focus would be "doing what I can to stay cancer-free".

In that same video, she said she hoped to be returning to duties where possible and just last week she was pictured hugging aspiring photographer Liz Hatton, 16, who has a rare form of cancer, after the teenager was invited to Windsor Castle by William to take pictures during an investiture ceremony he hosted. She also made a private visit a few weeks ago to watch the English National Ballet’s matinee show of Giselle at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London and posted on social media about the "moving and inspiring" performance.

Southport visit

Although Kate had been seen last week, the trip to Southport yesterday with William marked her first official engagement since her chemotherapy ended.

It was an unannounced trip as it is understood the engagement was planned as a solo visit for William but Kate decided to join her husband in order to show her support, empathy and compassion for the local community.

After spending around 90 minutes with the families of those killed, they walked the short distance to Southport Community Centre where they joined emergency responders involved in the attack to hear about their experiences and meet health practitioners supporting the "blue light" community in Southport.

Kate and William sat next to each other on a bench in the centre's gardens for an emotional conversation with the emergency workers. Referencing their earlier meeting with the families, Kate said: "I can't underestimate how grateful they all are for the support you provided on the day. On behalf of them, thank you."

Upcoming events

When it comes to more official appearances by Kate, aides have stressed any engagements would be undertaken in line with her continued recovery.

Royal sources said the princess would ease herself back into royal life by working from home and undertaking some engagements. She is expected to join members of the Royal Family at the Cenotaph on November 10 for Remembrance Sunday.

Meanwhile, it was revealed last month that Kate had held a meeting with royal aides and representatives from the Royal Foundation to make plans for her annual Christmas Carol concert at Westminster Abbey. It will be the fourth year the princess has hosted the Together At Christmas event for local charities in front of a host of celebrity names.
