Michael Schumacher's social media channels have posted for the first time in five months, following reports of the Formula 1 legend's first public appearance since his catastrophic accident in 2013.

The devastating event occurred while he was on a ski trip in the French Alps and, since then, update on Schumacher 's health have been rare. His immediate family, especially his devoted wife Corinna, have formed a protective shield around the privacy of the former Ferrari superstar.

But last month German news outlets reported that he was "very likely" in attendance at the wedding of his daughter Gina-Maria. She tied the knot with new husband Iain Bethke at the Schumachers' villa in Majorca.

That would have meant that Schumacher would have been visible to invited guests, including some family members and friends who have been shut out of the inner circle. But to prevent pictures being taken of the stricken F1 star, all guests had to give up their phones upon arrival at the wedding.

And now, for the first time in many months, Schumacher's official social media channels have become active again. Those handling his accounts sent out a tweet celebrated the race hero's legendary career.

In a throwback post filled with nostalgia, the social media account celebrated past glories - specifically the anniversary of his first F1 title with Ferrari and third overall. It was secured at the 2000 Japanese Grand Prix which brought "exploding emotions", the post wrote.

Alongside the post were two photos which brought back plenty of memories for F1 fans. One showed Schumacher alone celebrating on the podium, while the other featured his friend and then-Ferrari team principal Jean Todt, the pair spraying champagne at one another.

In an emotional conversation with L'Equipe last December, Todt, who went on the become the president of F1's governing body the FIA, said of his old friend: "Michael is here, so I don't miss him. He is simply not the Michael he used to be." Todt is understood to be one of the few non-family members who has been allowed to visit Michael during his recovery.

Further sharing his feelings, Todt disclosed: "He is different, and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now, and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That's all there is to say."

Schumacher's brother Ralf, also a former F1 driver, was spotted at the wedding. Now a pundit for Sky Germany, Ralf has said in the past that Michael's side of the family "go their own way" and that his "heart smiles" whenever he sees niece Gina-Maria or nephew Mick.
