Former Sheffield United player George Baldock has reportedly been found dead in a swimming pool in Greece.

Tributes have poured in for the 31-year-old ex-Premier League star after multiple outlets in Greece reported the shocking news. It is alleged that concerns were raised after the footballer’s wife was unable to contact him.

Mirror UK reports that Baldock was found in the pool and emergency services were called, with a doctor part of the response unit verifying that he had tragically died.

The defender qualified to play for Greece through his grandmother and made 12 appearances for the national side.

Greece was due to play England at Wembley on Thursday night, but Baldock was not named in Greece's squad for the clash having picked up an injury.

Baldock played with Sheffield United for seven years 2017 and 2024 having previously also represented MK Dons, Northampton and Oxford.

He had moved to Panathinaikos in Greece this summer after his release from the Blades and featured four times so far this season, the most recent of which was against Olympiacos on October 6.

Baldock played 219 times for Sheffield United in all competitions, scoring six goals in his time

Panathinaikos blacked out their profile picture on X and Instagram following the tragic news.

A statement from the Greek Super League read: "The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Baldock played 219 times for Sheffield United in all competitions, scoring six goals in his time, twice helping United win promotion from the Championship into the Premier League.

His elder brother Sam is also a former professional footballer. May he rest in peace.
