See who this Manchester United

Paul McGrath has tipped ex-England boss Gareth Southgate to reverse the downward spiral Manchester United have been on since Alex Ferguson left.

Five managers have tried and failed to recreate the magic at Old Trafford since Fergie’s retirement in 2013, Erik ten Hag the latest to be burdened by the weight of expectation. And McGrath, who was famously sold by Ferguson to Aston Villa in 1989, reckons Southgate’s experience of handling the England job will leave him equipped with the expectation of being United boss.

On Ten Hag, McGrath said: “While Erik is doing the best he can. I honestly don’t know whether he’s good enough to be manager of Manchester United. Maybe Gareth might be a good shout for the post, but whether he’d want it after having the England job is something I don’t know. What I do know is that he’d do a good job. He would be a great candidate.

“I want to see the club do well because I still love Manchester United. I criticise them sometimes on social media and I probably went a little bit too far once or twice. Then I get loads of bad stuff written on the Twitters and stuff like that, but I’m only trying to say what I see.”

McGrath has also praised Southgate’s successor, Lee Carsley, who played with him at Derby and Ireland. “Lee was a lovely kid when I met him all those years ago and it’s great what he’s doing. I wanted to wish him well when England came over to Ireland but I didn’t want him to beat us obviously, but it turned out he did.”

McGrath was also full of support for the job Unai Emery has performed at Aston Villa, transforming them from relegation candidates to Champions League participants.

He said: “I am very proud of what Unai has done for Aston Villa. It has been brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Long may it continue.

“I played my best football at Aston Villa and that’s the reason I love the club because I got a lot of love back from them. But I still have great friends at Manchester United and still love Manchester United an awful lot as well, but I would say that Villa will probably be the number one for me now.”

Irish football legend Paul McGrath has joined forces with Pringles to champion men's mental health throughout Movember. McGrath will serve as Pringles ambassador for its Movember campaign which is encouraging men to talk about their mental health.
