A BBC presenter has updated his audience after abruptly leaving his radio show due to a family emergency, revealing his mother had taken ill.

On Tuesday 8 October, Stephen Nolan had to exit The Nolan Show on BBC Ulster, where he's a regular host each weekday morning, 30 minutes early after the distressing news that his mum Audrey had collapsed at home. His fellow broadcaster Connor Philips was quick to step in, beginning his programme ahead of schedule to fill in.

Stephen, who spent until late evening with his mother, later spoke out about the nerve-wracking experience on his next day's show, expressing deep gratitude for the concern and support from his listeners regarding his mum's health scare. "She is in hospital. I think she is going to be alright," Stephen reassured during the broadcast.

"What happened was I was presenting the show yesterday morning and I got a phone call to say my mum had been found on the floor. I am sorry for leaving the show early but I am not sorry, because she is always going to come first." He continued to open up on the scary experience, overwhelmed by the outpouring of well-wishes for his mother's wellbeing.

"I will tell you what though and I mean this from the bottom of my heart because of the nature of what I do because of the nature of what the Nolan Show is, we are dealing with politics everyday. There is never a day goes by where there isn't controversy in this country. That brings a lot of flak and brings a lot of pressure and criticism", reports OK!.

He continued: "Yesterday, my phone did not stop with people from all around this country texting me to ask was I alright and to ask if my mum was alright. I am talking about friends, I am talking about this amazing place where I work, the BBC. This building just wraps its arms around you with love and support.

"Also politicians some of them who refuse to engage with this programme for their own reasons reaching out to me to say 'are you ok'. When I was up in that hospital last night and I walked out of it... It genuinely meant something to me that you all were thinking about me so I want to say thank you."

Stephen hasn't been the only BBC radio presenter to take time off air recently. Zoe Ball mysteriously vanished from her Radio 2 slot for a few weeks before returning at the end of last month. In August, fellow BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay was caught up in train dramas and being late for his show, leaving Scott Mills to jump in and cover.
