Jurgen Klopp has been appointed the new global head of soccer at Red Bull with the German cutting short the break he has been on since leaving Liverpool.

Klopp had been in charge of the Reds for nine years before quitting at the end of last season. He brought his reign to an end having won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

He was expected to take a long break from the game, though was heavily linked with the vacant England job. Instead, Klopp has opted to take on an executive-level job within Red Bull's network of worldwide football clubs.

Klopp has signed a long-term contract with the energy drinks company. He will begin his new role at the start of January, meaning his break lasted around seven months.

According to Red Bull, Klopp will be responsible for the firm's international network of clubs at the strategic management level. That means Klopp will be working at the highest level of management with a focus on long-term performance and vision.

Among the clubs which Red Bull control are Bundesliga title challengers RB Leipzig and MLS side New York Red Bulls. Klopp will also have responsibility for Austrian Bundesliga team Red Bull Salzburg, who are currently managed by his former assistant at Liverpool Pep Lijnders.

Klopp is excited to get started in his new job and revealed he sees himself as being a mentor to the coaches working under him. He also admitted that he believes it is the right time to step back from frontline coaching.

Klopp's job is similar to the one Ralf Rangnick held at Red Bull

“After almost 25 years on the sideline, I could not be more excited to get involved in a project like this. The role may have changed but my passion for football and the people who make the game what it is has not," Klopp said.

"By joining Red Bull at a global level, I want to develop, improve and support the incredible football talent that we have at our disposal. There are many ways that we can do this using the elite knowledge and experience that Red Bull possesses to learning from other sports and other industries.

"Together we can discover what is possible. I see my role primarily as a mentor for the coaches and management of the Red Bull clubs but ultimately, I am one part of an organisation that is unique, innovative and forward looking. As I said, this could not excite me more.”

It is likely that Klopp's role would be similar to the one former Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick held at Red Bull. And the firm's CEO of Corporate Projects and Investments is looking forward to working with Klopp.

“We are very proud of this outstanding and certainly the strongest signing in Red Bull's soccer history. Jürgen Klopp is one of the greatest and most influential figures in world soccer, with extraordinary skills and charisma," Oliver Mintzlaff added.

"In his role as Head of Soccer, he will be a game changer for our involvement in international soccer and its continued development. We are hoping for valuable and decisive impulses in key areas to make the clubs even better, both collectively and individually.”
