Pittsburgh Steelers sent stark Russell Wilson warning after huge Justin Fields hit
The Pittsburgh Steelers are unsure whether Justin Fields will be able to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday after he was knocked out of the 20-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Retired NFL star Dan Orlovsky has issued a stark warning to the Pittsburgh Steelers about rushing Russell Wilson into the starting lineup after Justin Fields was rocked by a hefty hit in their 20-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Fields, who moved to the Steelers from the Chicago Bears to clear space for top 2024 NFL Draft pick Caleb Williams, was forced out of Sunday's clash following a brutal tackle by Cowboys' 260-pound defensive end Tyrus Wheat.
The quarterback missed two plays and underwent a concussion check in the medical tent, with Kyle Allen stepping in briefly as Wilson continues his recovery from a calf injury. With Fields' status for the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders up in the air, the Steelers have been cautioned against hastily putting Wilson back in play.
Orlovsky, speaking on ESPN's Get Up, made it clear that switching Fields for Wilson won't fix the Steelers' offensive woes, as the team with a 3-2 record is faltering, particularly at receiver. He pointedly mentioned George Pickens as one of the underachievers.
"I would say that's the wrong decision [to put Wilson in]," Orlovsky commented. "I would say that Pittsburgh has an offensive problem and it's not the quarterback.
"The offensive line is not very good. They're not running the football nearly as well as I thought they would. The two things that are hurting in their pass game. There's two or three clips where you want to see Justin's eyes in a little bit of a better or more consistent place.
"There's no one getting open that much for this offense. George Pickens is unbelievably talented, but he's not winning that much and they're certainly not getting them the football enough early on in the football games.
"This is a football team offensively and their number one issue is when they get into those obvious passing situations. Third and six, third and seven.
"They cannot beat man coverage. So if you have to ask me really what's the fix for Pittsburgh's offense, it is not the quarterback. It is, they need a pass catcher opposite George Pickens. They become a viable threat."
Assuming Fields is given the green light to play, the Steelers will likely opt for the former first-round NFL Draft pick. After making a comeback against Dallas, he threw a touchdown pass - his fifth of the regular season. Fields has also only thrown one interception in 2024.
