Ireland looks set to avoid Hurricane Kirk as it hurtles towards Europe in the coming days, but there will still be a fairly dramatic shift in the weather this week.

Temperatures will drop from highs of 18 degrees on Monday to lows of close to freezing by Thursday due to the arrival of what weather expert Alan O’Reilly says will be “much cooler air dragged down over Ireland for a few days” as Hurricane Kirk misses us to the south.

After a weekend where most of the country was hit with weather warnings of some description, it looks set to be a fairly straightforward October week on the weather front before the arrival of cooler conditions heading into next weekend.

Met Éireann has forecast sunny spells with scattered showers on Monday and Thursday, with cloudy weather set to be more prominent on Tuesday and Wednesday and outbreaks of rain more likely.

The week will get off to a very mild start with highest temperatures of 18 degrees on Monday but they will gradually drop on a daily basis, with the mercury hitting no higher than 12 degrees on Thursday and dropping to as low as 1 degree on Thursday night.

Those temperatures will linger into the weekend, with Saturday set to be “cool and showery”, turning “cloudier with rain or showers on Sunday” as Alan O’Reilly suggests that the cold weather that has been forecast “may not hang around for long with milder air forecast to return again”.

Hurricane Kirk, meanwhile, is expected to have a significant impact on Portugal, Spain and particularly France come the middle of the week.

Check out the Met Éireann forecast for the coming days below.
