Former rugby star Mike Tindall has told of issues in his marriage to wife Zara Tindall as he admits that it isn't "that easy".

The ex-England player previously appeared on the ITV series Grand Slammers to go inside HMP The Mount to carry out a unique challenge. The Category C prison in Hertfordshire is home to one of the only remaining rugby pitches inside an adult male English prison.

During the show, Mike and his fellow rugby legend pals used the power of sports to build and train a group of prisoners to be strong enough to compete against a formidable rival, the Australians, reports the Daily Record.

During a scene from the second part of the series, the royal opened up his relationship with Zara, who is a niece of King Charles III, and his life after rugby.

He said: "Everyone thinks that just by marrying Zara that means it's all fine and dandy… But that doesn't stop the fact that you need a job.

"And it's not that easy, you know - you get quite institutionalised into rugby, it's a way of life and you leave the game and that's not there.

"I don't think you can ever sort of describe when you're so used to being around that many people, and understanding, because of it being ingrained in you, where you fit in to then not being that person.

"Zara would say if she was honest it was probably a year it took me to figure out what I was, who I was going to be."

He added: "You've got to then go carve where the next path is - you can never replace going to work with 35 of your best friends every day."

The aim of the series is to demonstrate how focusing energy into team sports can have a positive impact on prisoners' lives and potentially decrease the likelihood of them reoffending after their release.

Mike was joined in the two-part documentary by fellow rugby legends, captain Martin Johnson, Jonny Wilkinson, Lawrence Dallaglio, Phil Vickery, Jason Robinson, Will Greenwood, Ben Cohen, and Matt Dawson.

The sportsmen tried to form a team of prisoners and train them to be strong enough to compete and learn all about the camaraderie, intensity, emotion, buzz, and laughter that comes with being part of a team focused on a shared goal.

Grand Slammers is available to watch on on ITV1 and ITVX.
