Kilkenny's Darragh Joyce set to stay on with AFL champions Brisbane Lions
Joyce captained Kilkenny to win the 2014 All-Ireland minor hurling final against Limerick before embarking on a career in Australian rules football.
Darragh Joyce has signed a one-year extension with AFL Premiership champions Brisbane Lions.
The former Kilkenny minor hurling captain didn’t make the matchday squad as the Lions captured the flag in last Saturday’s comprehensive Grand Final win over the Sydney Swans at the MCG, but featured in six games over the course of the successful campaign. However, he was pushed out following the return of Jack Payne from injury, albeit he was included in the 26-man squad for the finals series.
The 27-year-old defender has now made 11 AFL appearances for the Lions across two seasons since joining from St Kilda, for whom he appeared 13 times across a five-year spell after making his AFL debut in 2018.

Joyce, brother of former Kilkenny hurler Kieran, is one of three Irish players on the books of the Queensland club with former Tyrone player Conor McKenna coming off the bench in the Grand Final to become just the second man to double up as an All-Ireland and Premiership winner, while Dubliner James Madden has made 13 AFL appearances for the Lions, albeit he’s down the pecking order at the moment.
