Weather experts are closely monitoring a significant Atlantic storm that is forecast to track close to Ireland next week.

Hurricane Kirk continues to strengthen and is forecast to become a Category 3 or stronger hurricane within the next couple of days.

It is currently moving west-northwest through the Atlantic, with predictions indicating it will gradually shift northwest towards Ireland by mid-next week.

Current weather models show the hurricane's remnants may pass just south of Ireland, however a week is a long time in weather forecasting terms, and changes in its trajectory are likely. As a result, meteorologists are carefully tracking its path amid concern it could potentially impact Ireland.

Amateur meteorologist Alan O'Reilly shared the latest models on his Carlow Weather social media accounts, noting: "Tropical storm Kirk is expected to become a hurricane soon but its longer term track remains uncertain. Latest weather models once again show it staying South of Ireland which is positive but a long way to go before gets near us."

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has predicted "unsettled weather" next week, with "wetter than average conditions" and the "potential for breezy winds".

Its full forecast for Monday, October 7 to Sunday, October 13 reads: "Next week will be unsettled, with low pressure to our south and southwest dominating Ireland’s weather and crossing the country at times. This will bring wetter than average conditions across most of the country. The south and east will be the wettest regions while rainfall amounts in the northwest will be closer to normal or slightly below normal. There is also potential for breezy conditions at times through the week. Temperatures will be around normal."

In the meantime, Ireland will enjoy a few settled and mild days of weather before it turns windy with rain and showers pushing in from the Atlantic by the weekend.

Highest temperatures of 13C to 16C in a light to moderate east to northeast wind, fresh at times along the east coast. Dry Wednesday night with clear spells, in light southeasterly breezes. Lowest temperatures generally ranging from 5C to 8C , milder on eastern and southern coasts.

"Another predominantly dry day Thursday with sunny spells. There is the chance of a few showers in the south and southwest. Maximum temperatures of 14C to 17C in freshening southeast winds. Patchy rain and drizzle will move in from the Atlantic to affect the south, west and northwest on Thursday night but it will hold mostly dry elsewhere with clear spells in the east.
