With Galway their first opponents in the 2025 Connacht Championship, the Tyrone man will realistically be looking to secure a first ever win in the Tailteann Cup for New York.

Latest inter-county appointmen

Tyrone native Ronan McGinley has been appointed as manager of the New York senior footballers.

McGinley replaces Alan O’Mara, who stepped down after just one season, having been part of the management team this year. A long-time New York resident, he played for the Exiles from 2011-17.

McGinley’s appointment means that there will be three Errigal Ciaran clubmen managing county teams in the 2025 Championship, with Malachy O’Rourke, though originally from Derrylin in Fermanagh, now charge of Tyrone and Mickey Harte at the helm in Offaly after leaving Derry. Indeed, McGinley’s brother, Enda, the three-time All-Ireland winner with Tyrone, is himself a former Antrim manager.

New York recorded a first ever Championship win last year, albeit on penalties, when beating Leitrim in the Connacht quarter-final but they were never likely to repeat that this year with Mayo the visitors to Gaelic Park as they suffered a 15-point defeat. In the Tailteann Cup, they gave eventual finalists Laois a fright before slipping to a four-point defeat in Portlaoise.

With New York not competing in the Allianz League, McGinley’s first competitive game in charge will be a daunting Connacht quarter-final against All-Ireland finalists Galway in the Bronx next April. His appointment means that only Clare, Westmeath and Derry are the only counties still to appoint a manager for the 2025 season.
