Dame Maggie Smith's brutal Downton Abbey comments have resurfaced after her death.

It was announced on Friday that the iconic actress had passed away at the age of 89. Since then, friends and fans of the star have been sharing tributes as well as reposting some of her most famous moments.

One of those is when Maggie appeared on Graham Norton when she was asked if she was glad that she had left Downton Abbey. The 2015 clip has re-circulated online which talks about Maggie starring on the period drama as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, from 2010 to 2015.

Despite the series being a huge success, Maggie said she was glad she left when she did. Graham asked her: "So are you, in a way, sort of glad that Downton's over?" As the actress quickly replied: "Oh yeah."

Graham immediately burst into laughter as Maggie added: "No, I really am. Honestly, she was about, by the time we had finished she must have been a hundred and ten so I couldn't go on and on. I couldn't! It just didn't make sense."

The presenter went on to ask if Dame Maggie had watched the drama herself as she hesitated and gave a cheeky look. She confirmed she didn't watch the series but said she does have the box set at home.

She was also Oscar nominated for 1965's Othello, 1972's Travels with My Aunt, 1985's Room With A View and 2001's Gosford Park. She also went on to gain a huge following among fans for her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter film series

Maggie passed away in hospital, it was announced by her two sons. They shared a statement which read: "It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.

"An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days. We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time."
