An alleged assassination attempt on Donald Trump has been thwarted in Florida, uncovering an AK-47 with a scope, a Go-Pro camera, and two backpacks at the scene. The unsettling incident unfolded at Trump's West Palm Beach golf club around 1:30 pm ET today when Secret Service agents spotted someone brandishing an AK-47 through a fence line.

During a press briefing at 5pm, Palm Beach Sheriff Rick Bradshaw disclosed that the suspect had been apprehended on the I-95 following a tip-off from a witness who observed the figure jumping into a black Nissan SUV after fleeing from the bushes.

"After that we took the witness and he identified him as the person seen running out of the bushes and jumping into a car," confirmed Sheriff Bradshaw.

Investigations point to the Go-Pro being positioned on the opposite side of the fence, while the FBI delves deeper into what they suspect to be an attempt on the former President's life.

Shortly after the incident at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Trump was shift to reassure his allies, indicating in an email to donors: "gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL! " It follows an earlier assassination effort Trump faced during a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Trump had flown back to Florida this weekend after a West Coast tour that included a Friday night rally in Las Vegas and a Utah fundraiser. His campaign had remained silent about Trump's Sunday plans, which often involve a morning round of golf followed by lunch at the club, reports the Mirror US.

In a nearby county, the sheriff disclosed that the suspect was unarmed and didn't question his arrest.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told WPTV that the man thought to be connected to the incident "was not armed when we took him out of the car."

The suspect maintained a calm, emotionless demeanour when stopped by police, according to Snyder. He added that the man did not ask why he was being pulled over.

"He never asked, 'what is this about? ' Obviously, law enforcement with long rifles, blue lights, a lot going on. He never questioned it," Snyder said.

Officials report that the Secret Service opened fire when a man pushed the muzzle of a firearm through the perimeter of the golf course.

A man brandishing an AK-style rifle thrust the firearm's muzzle through the boundary of Donald Trump's West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course while the Republican presidential candidate was playing a round.

The individual dropped the weapon and fled in an SUV, and was later captured in a neighbouring county, the officials reported. The officials were not authorised to discuss the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity.

Officials have confirmed that parts of the golf course were cordoned off for Trump's game, and agents identified an individual carrying a firearm several holes ahead of him.
