Sergio Perez swore angrily at a confused Carlos Sainz after they crashed into each other while chasing the podium in Baku.

A dramatic conclusion to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix saw three cars fighting for second place on the penultimate lap. Charles Leclerc had been pushing to win the race but, in the final stages, found himself dropping back from race winner Oscar Piastri.

Instead, he had to defend from Perez into turn one on the second-to-last lap. After successfully doing so, the door had been opened to Sainz in the other Ferrari who moved past the Red Bull - but Perez wasn't going to give up that easily.

The Mexican was gaining on Sainz heading out of turn two but then they touched as they raced up to high speed, causing both cars to veer to the left and career into the barrier - ending their hopes of the podium and throwing away a strong points haul for both.

And they were quick onto the radio to give their initial reactions to the incident. Listening to what Perez had to say, it was safe to assume he was furious and pinned the blame for the accident on his rival.

The Red Bull racer fumed: "What the f*** did this man do? Is he crazy or what? What an idiot!" Sainz, meanwhile, was more confused and asked: "What happened there? What happened?" Confirming to his race engineer that he was uninjured, he added: "Yeah, but I don't get it."

The crash was especially costly for Red Bull, as they saw a large haul of championship points slip through their fingers. As a result, they have now dropped to second in the constructors' championship for the first time since early 2022.

McLaren are now in pole position for a first teams' title success since 1998. And Red Bull's mood will not be improved by Max Verstappen 's fifth-placed finish as he had lost out to drivers' championship rival Lando Norris, who drove from 15th on the grid to cross the line fourth.

Piastri won the race from Leclerc who still has not won a race in Azerbaijan despite having qualified on pole in Baku four times now in his F1 career. George Russell benefitted from Perez and Sainz's crash to inherit an unexpected podium.

It was also good news for Lewis Hamilton in the other Mercedes, as he had started in the pit lane and the double crash pushed him up into the top 10. He was joined there by fellow Briton Oliver Bearman and also Franco Colapinto, both of whom were driving in only their second ever F1 races.
