TV star caught fuming on camera as Mrs Brown's Boys wins fourth NTA gong
BBC comedy Mrs Brown's Boys caused controversy at last night's National Television Awards as actor Kiell Smith-Bynoe was caught fuming on live TV
National Television Award nominees didn't hold back their thoughts on Mrs Brown's Boys scooping up the best comedy award.
The BBC comedy series, which debuted in 2011, was up against Ghosts, Not Going Out, Brassic and The Gentlemen. It was the fourth time Mrs Brown's Boys won the accolade at the NTAs, having already been awarded it in 2013, 2014 and 2015. However, actor Kiell Smith-Bynoe was unable to hide his outrage at them winning again.
Mrs Brown's Boys star and creator Brendan O'Carroll headed on stage to collect the award with his cast members, while Ghosts star Kiell appeared visibly unpleased. Just three weeks ago, the Taskmaster star urged fans to vote for Ghosts to win a NTA. Kiell stars in the series, which was created by the cast of hit CBBC series Horrible Histories.

He urged: "Don't let Mrs Browns Boys beat us again." Following Mrs Brown's Boys win, many fans were unsure if Kiell was truly as unimpressed as he appeared or if he was exaggerating. One said: "Kiell Smith-Bynoe Did not look happy." Another added: "Can't tell if Kiell Smith-Bynoe was doing his 'angry'/belligerent act like he did on Taskmaster or was genuinely fuming at Mrs Brown's Boys win!"
Someone else commented: "That #ghosts actors face just when he didn't win the award!" A fourth wrote: "Omg the face on that guy!" Mrs Brown's Boys has divided TV fans, with many eager for the next episodes while others are left desperately reaching for the remote.
It has always enjoyed high ratings over the years but the slapstick sitcom also been subjected to scathing reviews from unimpressed comedy fans. Brendan returned to his role as mischievous matriarch Agnes Brown for specials on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day last year.
Before the shows even aired, the actor decided to hit back at haters. He told the Daily Star : "First of all, I’m well aware that comedy is very subjective. What some people like, other people just detest. So I don’t take it too serious." Yet, it didn't stop many viewers blasting the series online.
"I’m just gonna leave this here….Mrs Browns Boys…we are forced to pay for this horrific content, it should be a choice," one TV fan once wrote on Xwhen discussing the state-funded channel. "Please please axe Mrs Browns Boys," another tweeted the BBC directly. Over the summer, BBC's director of comedy Jon Petrie awkwardly refused to answer if he finds the show funny.
"Can I ask as comedy chief, do you actually find Mrs Brown's Boys funny? And would you watch it if you didn't have to?" Jon was asked by someone in the audience at a Q&A for the BBC Comedy Showcase at Soho House in June. The TV boss nervously laughed at the question before he was saved by the Q&A's host, comedy writer Michelle de Swarte. She declared: "It's a trap. It's a trap. Look at me. That's a trap," before swiftly moving on.
