Celtic have emerged as favourites to sign Caoimhin Kelleher should the Irishman opt to leave Liverpool.

Kelleher has spent his entire career at Liverpool as back-up to Alisson Becker. With the news that Giorgio Mamardashvili will join the Reds next summer, Kelleher's spot as back-up and potential challenger to the number one shirt is under threat.

Speaking ahead of the Nations League clash between Republic of Ireland and Greece, Kelleher gave an update on his Liverpool future and hinted that it may be time for him to leave Anfield.

“I think I made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out,” he said, “The club has made that decision to get another goalkeeper as well, which from the outside looking in looks like they have made a decision to go in a different direction.

“So yeah, my ambition has always been clear and has been clear the last few seasons, that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out. Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like that is 100 percent my decision, and maybe at times it’s not always in my hands as well.

“Like I said, my ambition was to go out and play and be a number one. I think it’s been reported that Liverpool rejected a few bids as well. So like I say, it’s not always in my hands to fully make the decision.

“So my ambition is clear, I think I am good enough and I want to go out and prove that I can play week in, week out.”

Kelleher has attracted interest in previous transfer windows from the likes of Brentford and Nottingham Forest, and while those clubs will likely be vying for the Corkman's signature, Celtic appear to be favourites to snap up the highly-rated shot-stopper.

Lee Astley, spokesperson for betideas.com, said: “Caoimhin Kelleher has made no secret of his desire to leave Liverpool after falling further down the goalkeeper pecking order at Anfield, and we make Celtic the frontrunners to secure the Irishman’s signature.

“Brendan Rodgers’ side lead the betting at 6/4 to be Kelleher’s next club, though he’ll likely have some admirers in the Premier League, with Brighton and Nottingham Forest also rumoured to be interested.”
