The Longford Senior Football Championship could be put on ice after an objection into a phantom point in a recent crunch tie was upheld by county chiefs.

That decision by Longford chiefs has had a huge bearing on the local championship with Dromard handed a quarter-final lifeline and Carrickedmond plunged into a relegation play-off against Longford Slashers.

Carrickedmond haven’t taken the decision lying down and have already launched an appeal.

Controversy has raged since 2018 Leinster champions St Columba’s, Mullinalaghta objected to the result of their recent meeting with Carrickedmond.

Mullinalaghta were adamant Carrickedmond were awarded an extra point in error in the first half.

Local media notes from the game in Ballymahon and TV evidence were both used by the Longford Competitions Control Committee (CCC) to adjudicate on the matter.

The game was on ‘Clubber TV’ - a growing platform that streams online GAA games from across the country.

The tie finished in a 2-12 apiece draw, with Carrickedmond coming from 10 points behind at one stage to claim a result that meant Abbeylara topped the six team group.

The original result also meant that Dromard were knocked out of the competition and sent into a relegation play-off.

This latest twist, which has seen Mullinalaghta awarded the win, has put an entirely different complexion on the Longford Championship.

Mullinalaghta are now in top spot and have a different quarter-final opponent next weekend - St. Mary’s Granard.

Dromard have also qualified out of the six team group and face holders and favourites Killoe in the quarter-finals, with Carrickedmond now going into a relegation play-off against Longford Slashers.

Carrickedmond’s appeal is likely to focus on the premise that they played the game based on the scoreline - and in the knowledge that a draw would be enough to see them through.

GAA rules say an objection can be upheld if, “A score allowed by the referee was not recorded by the referee or that a score was incorrectly recorded by the referee, thereby affecting the result of the game.”
