The father of suspected senior Kinahan gangster Liam Byrne has died, it emerged last night.

The Irish Mirror has learned that James “Jaws” Byrne, who was in his mid 70s, died in Dublin on Saturday evening.

It’s understood he had been suffering from kidney issues in recent weeks. His death comes just a week before his son Liam, 44, is due to stand trial in London’s Old Bailey on firearms and other offences. If convicted, Byrne jnr could be locked up for life.

James Byrne had been unwell for several weeks. Mourners were calling to the family home in Crumlin to offer their condolences to his wife Sadie and the family members all day yesterday.

Byrne had recently been treated as an inpatient in Tallaght Hospital. His son Liam will go on trial over firearms and conspiracy charges next week.

Sources say it is highly unlikely Liam Byrne will be allowed to travel to Ireland for his father’s funeral.
