'Time to find the big coat again': Met Eireann warn of frosty conditions over week
'Time to find the big coat aga

It is “time to find the big coat again” with the mercury set to plummet this week and autumn weather well and truly here.

The coming days will see temperatures dip in the evening time, reaching chilly lows of 4C on Thursday alongside a chance of hail and lightning, with scattered showers and heavy rain also forecast throughout the week.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather also warned that temperatures were set to take a dip during the week, with the ‘time to find the big coat again’ arriving for Wednesday, and a ‘risk of frost’ hitting on Thursday.

He wrote on his weather updates page: “Windchill forecast for Wednesday and Thursday morning shows how it will be time to find the big coat again.”

“Gardeners take note that there is a risk of grass frost Thursday night this week,” he added in a later post.

From the wet and rainy start of the week to the frosty and cold rest of the week, here the Met Éireann forecast for the coming days:

Monday

Largely dry to begin today, but with increasing cloud gradually feeding in patchy rain or drizzle to western and northern counties, with perhaps the odd spot up elsewhere. Westerly winds will increase moderate to fresh later today. Highs of 14C to 19C, mildest across southeast counties.

Rather blustery tonight with rain across northern and western areas; some heavier falls are possible. Rain will begin to show up across other areas towards morning. Lows of 8C to 12C, in fresh and gusty westerly winds.

Tuesday

Outbreaks of rain will affect many areas early Tuesday, soon clearing southwards. While sunny spells will follow, some scattered showers will feed down in the flow too, mainly affecting the north and northwest areas. Cool with highs of 13C to 16C, in fresh and gusty northwesterly winds.

Tuesday night will be cool with clear spells and some showers, mainly across Atlantic counties. Lows of 6C to 9C, in a moderate northwest wind.

Frosty weather in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

Wednesday

Noticeably cool and breezy with sunny spells and scattered heavy showers, most frequent in northern area, with the chance of hail and lightning. Highs of 11C to 14C in fresh northwest winds. Showers will mainly be confined to north and northwest counties overnight and winds will ease. Chilly with lows of 4C to 7C.

Thursday

Another cool day with sunshine and scattered showers, but overall drier, especially across the western half of the country. Highs of 11C to 14C, in a moderate northwest wind. Cold and clear overnight with grass frost.

Friday

A chilly start but dry with some early sunshine. Cloud wil increase with some rain and drizzle gradually feeding into west and northwest areas. Highs of 11C to 16C, in light to moderate southerlies; best values across southwest counties.
