Ireland weather: Temperatures

Parts of Ireland look set for one last blast of summer today as temperatures are set to soar to 25C on Saturday, September 7.

The best of the sunshine will be experienced in the north today, while it will be warmest along the west coast and in the Midlands.

The south, meanwhile, will see cloudier conditions and the risk of a few showers throughout the day.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said of Saturday: "Any overnight mist and fog will soon clear to leave a largely dry day with warm sunshine gradually breaking through. Cloudier across southern counties with the chance of a few showers. Top temperatures of 19 to 25 degrees in light variable breezes. Sea fog may drift into some coastal districts at times.

"Tonight most areas will remain dry under broken cloud, however some showery rain will arrive into west and northwest areas overnight. Mild and humid with lows of 12 to 15 degrees in light to moderate northwest winds. Some areas of mist and fog developing also."

This comes ahead of a major downturn in temperatures in the coming days, with afternoon lows of 13C or 14C forecast for early next week, while overnight temperatures could drop to as low as 4C on Wednesday night, according to the national forecaster.

Popular online forecaster Alan O'Reilly, who mans the @CarlowWeather account on X, has explained how a major change in airmass over northern and western Europe is anticipated through the next week, with a plume of cooler air bringing with it lower temperatures.
