September has ushered in the dreaded spider season - with experts suggesting that the average UK home could be harbouring around 50 eight-legged guests seeking shelter and sustenance during autumn.

Google searches on spider eviction methods have spiked recently, but what's the magnet for these arachnids into our abodes? James Sheldon, who runs Online Sofa shop, has pinpointed an often overlooked culprit the humble crumbs nestled within our sofas.

James elaborates on the allure of certain spaces for spiders: "Spiders are often drawn to your home due to the presence of insects that they need to consume to survive.

"Crumbs and other food remnants can slip into the crevices of your sofa, becoming a food source for any insects they attract. Spiders are carnivorous and like to be in warm spaces and are likely to seek out food sources like insects and shelter in your home. The small crevices and cracks in or around your sofa are a haven for spiders as they follow their prey."

For those with arachnophobia, James offers some sage advice to mitigate the spider invasion, reports the Daily Record. His top tip is to regularly vacuum up any stray crumbs and give your sofa a good dusting to ward off both insects and their eight-legged predators.

He emphasised the importance of routine cleaning by saying: "To prevent your sofa from becoming a hotbed for insects and spiders, vacuum it weekly to remove dust and crumbs and treat spills and stains as soon as they happen to prevent them from sitting in." For those wanting to keep spiders not just off their sofas but out of their homes altogether, James has more pro tips up his sleeve.
