Animal welfare groups to hold protest against new XL bully laws
The protest will take place in St Stephen's Green in Dublin on Saturday
A demonstration will take place in St Stephen's Green in Dublin on Saturday by animal welfare groups in protest against new rules on XL Bully dogs set to be introduced next month.
Dangerous XL Bully dogs are set to be banned in Ireland from October 1 following a spate of high-profile attacks in recent months.
It is understood that a ban on XL Bullies will now be implemented in two phases over the next seven months.

The first phase will come into effect on October 1 2024 and will see a complete ban on the breeding, rehoming, reselling and importing of an XL Bully dog.
From February 1 2025, there will be a ban on owning an XL Bully unless you have secured a “Certificate of Exemption”.
A Certificate of Exemption will only be issued to owners who can prove that their XL Bully breed of dog has a dog licence and is microchipped and neutered. The rules that will be introduced in Ireland will be similar to rules that have been previously introduced in the UK and Northern Ireland in recent months.
Brenda Fitzpatrick from the Working Animal Guardians Rescue told RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne that there's a huge “moral and ethical” in banning XL bullies as pounds and rescues are already overflowing.
"There's a huge welfare, moral and ethical issue here,” she said.
“Dog pounds and rescues are overflowing with different types of bull breeds, including the XL bullies, and once 1 October comes in these dogs cannot be rehomed so they will basically be condemned to death..
"We're talking about a whole population of dogs here that have done absolutely nothing wrong only they have the unfortunate luck in life to be owned by the wrong people."
