Lee Carsley was giving nothing away on the eve of the Nations League opener between his England team and Ireland.

The former Boys in Green midfielder is in temporary charge of the Three Lions as the FA continues its search for Gareth Southgate’s long-term successor.

Carsley, the European Championship-winning Under-21 coach, is firmly in contention - and would do his cause the world of good with a win in Dublin.

So all eyes are on his first senior team selection - and whether it will contain a large number of the younger players drafted into his squad.

He has handed first senior call-ups to Chelsea forward Noni Madueke (22), Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (24), Newcastle defender Tino Livramento (21) and Lille midfielder Angel Gomes (24).

He is very familiar with each of them - and could include some in his starting-11.

Irish eyes, however, will be on whether former senior Ireland international Declan Rice and ex-Under-21 winger Jack Grealish get a start, with Harry Kane another who could have represented the Boys in Green thanks to his Galway heritage.

Carsley spoke in the team’s Carton House base on Friday evening about the reception Rice and Grealish might expect on Saturday.

“We spoke not only about Jack and Declan, but to the whole squad,” he said, “we spoke about the atmosphere.

“We expect it to be exciting, passionate and loud. But it will be no different to what the players are used to in Premier League games or high-level games, so I think they will be ready for whatever comes out.”

Here’s how we think England might line out in Dublin:

Jordan Pickford (Everton); Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), John Stones (Manchester City), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa); Declan Rice (Arsenal), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United); Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle); Harry Kane (Tottenham)
