An Irish woman has died after being caught up in an avalanche horror in Argentina.

The woman, who has not been named yet, was skiing with two men on a mountain in the south west of the country when the tragedy happened on Wednesday, local reports say.

One of the men is now missing and the other received injuries in the incident on Lopez Mountain in the Bariloche area at around 5.15pm local time.

Reports say the Irishwoman had been on holiday in the area and had been there for several days before the tragedy happened close to a lodge used by tourists and hikers.

Rescuers rushed to the area in the aftermath of the avalanche and recovered the body of the Irish woman, but had to suspend the search for the missing man on Wednesday nit. It is due to start again later today.

A spokesman for the Club Andino Bariloche Relief Commission, which is a local mountain rescue agency, confirmed that the Irish woman had died.

The rescue operation was suspended overnight.

He also confirmed that the two men were Argentinian. He said the injured survivor was treated at the scene before being evacuated from the mountain.

The man was suffering from hypothermia and emergency workers said he was unable to give them any information about the Irish woman or the missing man. Some 20 people worked in the search for survivors in the avalanche deposit, he said.

Lopez Mountain is located in what is known as the Circuito Chico tourist area. Its peak is some 2,100 meters high. The local tourism authority says it is popular with tourists- and activities include skiing, trekking and even the use of zip lines.
