How to naturally soften towels

It's a real pain when your towels lose their softness and start to feel like sandpaper, but there's an easy fix to get them back to their best with just one simple laundry trick.

If you've been cramming your washing machine too full, your towels won't have enough room to rinse properly, leading to a buildup of soapy residue that makes them stiff over time.

Cassandra, the cleaning guru behind Frugal Family, has also pointed out that going overboard with laundry detergent can make your towels less cuddly and more scratchy.

She explained: "The washing detergent you use to wash your towels can build up in the fibres of your towel and will gradually make your towels less fluff and more rough, and will mean that they're not as absorbent as they once were."

But don't fret there's a dead simple way to bring life back to those "cardboard" feeling towels and make them feel brand spanking new, using just a couple of pantry staples, reports the Express.

Cassandra advised: "Non-fluffy towels are super easy to fix though and just need a couple of things you'll probably already have in your kitchen cupboard white vinegar and baking powder."

So what's the secret? The acidity of white vinegar is the hero here, breaking down the alkaline detergent residues so your towels can get a proper clean.

Plus, vinegar doubles as a natural fabric softener, relaxing the fibres and making your towels delightfully soft again. Baking soda is mildly abrasive, meaning it gently lifts any remaining build-up from the fibres that the vinegar did not get rid of.

Here's how to naturally get your towels fluffy again

Firstly, gather all your towels and place them in the washing machine, but make sure not to overload the drum.

Next, add 240ml of white vinegar to the detergent drawer, and do not add washing detergent or fabric softener.

Then, wash on a hot 90C cycle and once the wash has finished, do another high-temperature wash but this time add 200g to the detergent drawer.

Your towels should already feel much better, but make sure to dry them outside in the sun or a gentle setting in the tumble dryer.

Once the towels are dried, they should be fully revived and as fluffy as the day you bought them.

Cassandra said: "The towel refresh wash should remove all of the soapy residues from your towels and in most cases, should make them much softer again but sometimes it might take a couple of washes to see the difference depending on how far gone your towels were".
